Thanh is passionate about supporting individuals, couples, and families during the perinatal period. She has an open, warm and caring approach ensuring clients feel immediately at ease in the therapeutic environment. It was through her role as a Home-Start Volunteer with Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia (PANDA) that Thanh developed a passion for prevention, early intervention and treatment approaches to perinatal mental health. Thanh recognises the importance of relationships during this time and enjoys working with couples as they transition into parenthood.
Prior to joining the team at Stirling, Thanh worked in community health, not-for-profit and educational settings. Thanh has experience working with children, adolescents and adults in treating depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, stress, life transitions, interpersonal difficulties and anger management.
Thanh has provided early intervention and prevention services through group facilitation, parent sessions and couples counselling in supporting families with adjusting to parenthood. Thanh continues to work in community health in supporting families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds during the perinatal period
Thanh’s level of education and training led to her receiving registration as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia and being awarded membership with the Australian Psychological Society.
After completing a Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) and Bachelor of Applied Science Psychology (Honours), Thanh went on to complete a Post Graduate Diploma of Professional Psychology. Thanh is passionate about staying up to date with the latest treatment approaches for antenatal and postnatal mental health and she has completed training with the Centre of Perinatal Excellence (COPE) in Perinatal Mental Health and Perinatal Loss. Thanh has also completed Perinatal Non-Directive Counselling Training and is eligible to provide services under the Pregnancy Support Medicare items (MBS item numbers 81000 and 81500).
Thanh is passionate about preventing the onset of mental illness through preventative and early interventions approaches, with a particular interest in perinatal mental health and parenting. Thanh’s honours thesis examined intergenerational differences in parenting styles of Chinese and Vietnamese immigrants in Australia. Thanh has experience supporting families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in adjusting to parenting in the postnatal period.
Thanh is also passionate about working with couples to strengthen their relationship, particularly as they transition to parenthood. Thanh has completed Level 1 training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and enjoys providing relationship counselling as well as working with individuals to enhance their relationships.
Thanh’s warm, genuine, and compassionate approach to therapy allows her clients to feel safe and comfortable in the therapeutic environment. Thanh believes treatment should be collaborative, and tailored to each clients’ individual, couple, and family needs. Thanh places great importance on providing a supportive and nurturing environment where clients feel safe and supported to explore their thoughts, feelings and experiences to gain understanding, clarity and insight.
Thanh is committed to her ongoing professional development and staying up to date with the latest research and treatment approaches. Thanh believes in a holistic, integrative, multi-disciplinary approach to treatment. She works closely with relevant health professionals on the Mornington Peninsula to ensure the best possible care for her clients.
Thanh believes in empowering individuals to reach their true potential by using a person-centred and strengths-based approach. She draws on a variety of evidence-based methods in tailoring treatment to each individual including: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and has an interest in using Mindfulness, Solution-Focused Therapy and Compassion-Focused Therapy techniques. Thanh draws on attachment theory and psychodynamic approaches to better understand individuals, couples and families. Thanh is able to offer online psychology appointments as well as appointments from our Mornington practice.
