Metaxia has worked in community, public and private hospital settings. She has experience working with children, adolescents and adults providing individual, parenting and group-based interventions. Metaxia has a particular interest working with adults who have experienced significant stressors or trauma in their life, who are struggling with feelings of anxiety or depression and with individuals who generally would like to gain further insight or coping strategies to deal with life’s challenges. Metaxia draws on a variety of evidence-based methods to tailor and individualise treatment based on each client’s needs. She has experience working within the therapeutic modalities of: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Schema therapy, Attachment Theory and Mindfulness-based strategies.
Metaxia spent 8 years studying at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). After completing her Bachelor of Psychology with first-class honours, she continued into a combined degree where she completed a Masters of Clinical Psychology together with a PhD. Metaxia is currently registered as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia and holds memberships with the Australian Psychological Society (APS), Australian Clinical Psychology Association (ACPA) and the Australasian Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ASTSS).
Metaxia’s PhD research was focused on the role of secure attachment priming on fear learning. That is, how thinking of your loved one can help you cope with and recover from stressful events and prevent forming long-lasting fear memories. She has presented her research at many national and international conferences and has published this work in prestigious scientific journals. Through her research, Metaxia has become passionate about identifying how each individual’s social support system interacts with their mental health and well-being.
Metaxia has a warm, authentic and compassionate style in relating to her clients, while also encouraging and empowering them to work towards their own goals in building a ‘life worth living’. Metaxia holds the philosophy that she may be able to bring some level of psychological expertise to the table, but that at the end of the day the client themselves is truly the expert in the room when it comes to finding a way to change and grow. Metaxia will always work together with and alongside the client in finding the space to express their deepest concerns and investigating ways in which they might change the things they can and accept those they can’t.
Metaxia believes in an integrative, holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to treatment. She works in collaboration with relevant health professionals to ensure the best possible clinical outcomes for her clients. Metaxia’s relaxed, caring and mindful approach allows her client’s to feel comfortable within the therapeutic environment.
